FAQ

My work has disappeared!

Your project is kept in the browser where you created it. Check that you are:

  • on the same device and in the same browser (Firefox and Chrome do not share their data);
  • not in private browsing: everything there is erased when the window closes;
  • at the same address of CapyCode.

The project is also replaced when you import a ZIP, open a share link or create a new project. To never lose anything again, export your project as a ZIP regularly (see Saving and sharing).

I changed my file, but the program still does the same thing

The Run button saves the file on screen. If your program imports another file you changed (tools.py), save it too (Ctrl+S, or File › Save All): a dot ● on a tab means a file that is not saved yet.

My program does not stop

Click in its console and press Ctrl+C. See Stopping a program.

The Run button has disappeared, or it is grayed out

It only appears for a file that can be run: .py, or .sql and .ml (if their corresponding extension has been enabled in the Extensions panel). Check the extension of the file on screen; rename it if needed (F2 in the explorer).

It is grayed out while a program is running: wait for the end, or stop it.

The first run is slow

On the first run, CapyCode downloads the Python interpreter: this takes a few seconds, more on a slow connection. The next runs are much faster. A connection is also needed the first time you use a library (numpy, matplotlib…).

Is pip install useless?

It works, but you usually don't need it: an import numpy in your program downloads the library on its own.

My program creates a file, but I can't see it

Files written by a program stay in its own copy of the project and disappear afterwards. To keep its results: python main.py > results.txt in the terminal. See Running a program.

The editor underlines my code in red

That is the code analysis: hover over the underlining to read the explanation and the tip. See Mistakes spotted as you type.

A link only carries text. To share images, export the project as a ZIP.

It was probably cut by a messaging tool: check that it is complete. For a large project or a long history, include fewer commits in the link, or use the ZIP.

Git refuses to merge

First commit your changes (or discard them): a merge starts from a clean project. If a merge is already in progress, finish it or abort it from the Git panel. See Merging.

I can't find Git

In some activities, the teacher has hidden Git. Otherwise, the last icon of the activity bar opens the Source Control panel.

I'm stuck in the editor with the Tab key

In the editor, Tab indents the code. Press Esc, then Tab, to move on. See Keyboard and accessibility.

A message offers to reload the page

A new version of CapyCode is available. Save your files, then reload: your project is kept.
