Keyboard and accessibility

All of CapyCode can be used with the keyboard, and the interface is designed for screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver): every button has a name, every area a title, and messages are announced. It aims at level AA of the accessibility rules (WCAG 2.2, and its French counterpart RGAA 4.1.2).

On macOS, replace Ctrl with Cmd (⌘).

Moving around the interface

  • Skip links: at the very beginning of the page, Tab shows links to go straight to the editor, the side panel or the console.
  • Tab goes from one area to the next; inside an area, the arrow keys move between items:
    • activity bar: ↑ ↓, Enter to show the view;
    • file tree and outline: ↑ ↓, → opens a folder, ← closes it, Enter opens the file, F2 renames, Delete deletes;
    • tabs: ← →, Home End, Enter shows, Delete closes; Ctrl+Shift+← / → move the tab, Ctrl+Alt+← / → send it to the other pane;
    • menus: ↓ opens, the arrows go through the items (→ enters a submenu, ← exits it), Esc closes.
  • The borders between areas (side panel, editors, bottom panel) take focus: the arrow keys move them, Enter restores the default size.
  • Esc closes the open window or menu; focus goes back where it was.

Leaving the editor

In the editor, Tab indents the code instead of moving on. To leave it with the keyboard:

  • press Esc, then Tab;
  • or Ctrl+M switches the Tab key between "indent" and "move to the next item".

The input fields of the consoles and the terminal work the same way: Esc, then Tab.

Resolving conflicts with the keyboard

During a Git merge, the buttons above the conflict blocks are for the mouse. With the keyboard, use the palette commands: "Conflict: keep the current version", "… the incoming version", "… both versions", "Conflict: go to the next one", "… the previous one". See Git.

Reading comfort

  • Light or dark theme, contrasts checked in both (Customizing the display).
  • The browser zoom (Ctrl + / Ctrl -) enlarges the whole interface.
  • Drag and drop always has another way: a palette command, a shortcut or a terminal command.
